Sri Vijaya Puram, Mar. 16: Road accidents and resultant fatalities as well as injuries are a matter of serious concern for the Government of India as well as Andaman & Nicobar Administration. One of the methods in reducing the number of road accidents is creation of effective road safety awareness among the citizen. In this direction, Transport Department organized a day long Road safety awareness camp along with service delivery at the door steps of citizen in respect of the services provided by Transport Department was held at Ograbraj on Mar. 13. The camp was organized with active participations by the Mithakhari and Tushnabad Panchayats.
The Road safety Awareness camp- cum-Parivahan Vibhag Aapke Dwar was inaugurated by Dr. Jatinder Sohal, Director of Transport on Mar. 13 in the Community Hall at Ograbraj village. Local residents of Mithakhari, Tushnabad, Ferrargunj, Tirur, Collinpur and nearby villages participated in the camp.
In his address, Director (Transport) appreciated the enthusiasm shown by the students and others present on the occasion in gaining knowledge about the laws of Road Safety. He emphasized the need on careful and defensive riding especially by the youngsters in two wheelers which are more difficult to drive as compared to other vehicles, are involved in majority of the road accidents and fatalities. He also appealed all the road users to follow the traffic laws in true spirit.
The Director of Transport further stated that the goal of the Administration is to bring all the services to the doorsteps of citizen and this awareness camp would also facilitate the citizen to avail all the services of Transport Department in the camp itself. He concluded that the mission on road safety would only be successful if all stakeholders including the citizens actively and constructively participate in it.
Shri Mohammed Aslam, Retired DySP as guest of honour, shared his thoughts on the common habits among the traffic violators, routine traffic violations, the reasons behind committing such violations etc. Shri Mohammed Shafique, Pradhan, Mithakhari Panchayat and Shri Anand Amrit Raj, Pradhan, Tushnabad Panchayat appreciated the efforts of Transport Department in creating awareness on road safety. Medical Officer of PHC Tushnabad stressed on the need for immediate shifting of road accident victims during the golden hour in order to save the precious lives and also mentioned about the basic procedures to be followed while attending the victims. Shri Basit Ali, MVI from Transport Department shared the data on the road accident scenario of previous years alongwith reasons for these accidents and suggested various preventive actions to be taken for reducing the road accidents.
Earlier, welcoming the gathering, the Deputy Director (Transport), Shri B. Binoy gave a brief account of the ongoing Road Safety Campaign and dwelt at length the importance of observing road safety practices of every road user’s life.
A quiz competition on the topics of Road safety was conducted on this occasion in which teams from five Panchayats participated with enthusiasm. The program concluded with vote of thanks given by Shri. Somasekharan Pillai, Assistant Engineer, STS Ferrargunj. In the camp, a total of 174 persons cleared the leaner’s test and obtained Learners license. Participants also benefitted from other registration and driving license related activities.
