Port Blair, Aug 18: In pursuance to the directions of the Chief Secretary, A&N Administration, the Directorate of RD, PRIs and ULBs, Andaman and Nicobar Administration under the guidance of Secretary (RD/Panchayat) has launched an intensive campaign – Kachra Mukt Panchayat Abhiyan across the 70 Gram Panchayats in the Islands.
The aim of the campaign is to foster green and clean villages across the UT free from garbage and waste. The campaign objective is to promote visual cleanliness, encourage community participation focusing on awareness generation and education to sustain the ODF Plus status of the villages under the flagship programme of Govt. of India – Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen).
The campaign kicked-off with mass cleanliness drive organized uniformly across all the 70 Gram Panchayats, wherein the PRI representatives at all levels viz. Zilla Parishad Members, Panchayat Samiti Members, Pradhans and Ward Members actively led the campaign at respective identified sites. A large number of civil society organizations and community members participated under the campaign. A total of 2000 Kgs of segregated dry waste has been meticulously collected by Blocks, Panchayat Samiti, and Gram Panchayats, marking a commendable achievement in the quest for a cleaner and healthier rural environment.
As part of the campaign, the Panchayats shall be endeavoring to continued improvement in sanitation parameters, thereby competing for the overall top performer at the UT, District and Blocks levels.
