Port Blair, July 6: An awareness program on the theme Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act and the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act was organized by ICDS Urban Project & ICDS Ferrargunj Project at Community Hall, Mithakhari yesterday. Shri Mohammed Shafiq, Pradhan, Mithakari, Dr. Farheen Kamil from PHC, Tushnabad, PRI members, CDPOs of Urban and Ferrargunj Project, ANM, ICDS Functionaries, Poshan Staff and HEW Staff were present on the occasion.
The program began with a welcome address by Smt. Irene Nicolas, CDPO, ICDS Ferragunj Project. Anganwadi Workers performed a traditional song and dance, followed by a poem recitation.
Dr. Farheen Kamil delivered an enlightening briefing on the PCPNDT Act and the MTP Act, emphasizing their critical roles in safeguarding women’s health and rights. The PCPNDT Act aims to prevent sex-selective abortions and ensure the lawful and ethical use of prenatal diagnostic techniques. The MTP Act provides a legal framework for the safe and regulated termination of pregnancies, ensuring women’s access to essential reproductive health services.
Shri Mohammed Shafiq emphasized the societal value of the girl child and advocated for equal opportunities in healthcare, education, and social support.
Ms. Reeta Devi, Welfare Officer (Women) discussed on women’s empowerment and relevant legal acts like Dowry and Domestic Violence laws. She also explained the POCSO Act to school children, ensuring they understood their rights. Smti Zareena Bibi, CDPO ICDS Urban Project, stressed on the importance of girl child education for empowerment. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Smti Pratima Rai, Mukhya Sevika, ICDS Ferrargunj Project, a press release from CDPO, ICDS, South Andaman said.
