Port Blair, Jan 27: As many as 23 persons have been hospitalized in Bakultala Village of Middle Andaman last night, with symptoms like loose motions, Nausea, vomiting and Stomach ache etc after consuming Republic Day Sweets distributed by village Panchayat.
“28 people came to Rangat Hospital of Middle Andaman with such symptoms out of which five were treated as OPD patient, three were detained while 20 were hospitalized,” a senior Police officer of Middle Andaman told ‘Andaman Sheekha’ on the condition of anonymity.
According to reports the Panchayat of Bakultala had ordered for 2000 sweets (Laddoos) in a local sweet stall for Republic Day Celebration, following which the shop owner had started preparing sweets since 23rd January 2013 and had wrapped each laddo in separate plastic wrapper.
“We consumed Laddoes at around 10.30 am and from 2.00 pm onwards many of us fell sick and developed symptoms of vomiting, loose motion, nausea and stomach ache,” Mr Biswanathan, a victim of food poisoning and a resident of Bakultala village told ‘Andaman Sheekha’ today after getting discharge from Rangat Hospital of Middle Andaman today.
According to police sources out of 23 patients three were detained for observation while 20 were admitted in Hospital, out of these 20 at present seven (two children and five women) are still in hospital while rest of them have been discharged this afternoon.
Meanwhile Police has registered a case against the sweet stall owners, Mr Kuarunanidhi.
“We have registered a case under section 337 and 273, which is sale of noxious food or drink and Negligent act likely to spread infection or disease. However as the sections are bailable offence the accused has been released on bail after arrest,” the Police Officer added. (with Input from Billyground Correspondent Trinath)
