Diglipur, Oct 12: The JNRM girl students blocked the Marina Park road to press for demand of getting accommodation in the Girls’ Hostel in the evening today.
As per report, the JNRM girl students took to the road in the evening as they are not getting the hostel for the last two years. They shouted slogans and demanded for hostel accommodation. The agitation was led by Mr. MA Sajid, President NSUI who said that the JNRM girl students have been deprived of hostel facilities for the last two years. He further said that inter-islands girl students most of them are from poor farmer & mazdoor families and they can’t afford a rented house when they don’t get the hostel facility.
This year some girl students have been given hostels while more than 200 girl students are staying outside paying high rent. He further alleged that girl students aren’t getting the stipend regularly. A girl student belonging to an indigent family said that she, like other girl students coming from inter-islands, isn’t in a position to bear the exorbitant room rent and incidental expenses required while staying in a rented room in Port Blair. She further said that a number of girl students of JNRM have quit their education in the middle of the academic session as they couldn’t afford the room rent and other expenses. Cautioning the Administration, Mr. MA Sajid further said that he is standing with the girls students and if the Administration doesn’t come with a solution to this effect, he, along with the girl students of JNRM will resort to chakka jam and at the same time they will mount to close down the college and intensify their dharna, the report further said.
It is learnt that by evening some senior officers visited the protest site but as no assurance was given on writing the girl students decided to continue their protest.
