Port Blair, Sept 11: Even after sixteen years after the formation of the North and Middle Andaman District in August 2006, the region’s primary medical facility, R.P. Hospital in Mayabunder, faces a worrying shortage of medical professionals, including specialist doctors.
Reports reveal that the district hospital, which was envisioned as the district’s premier healthcare center, lacks essential specialists like gynaecologists, paediatricians, orthopaedic, and ophthalmologists.
Local residents of the Mayabunder region expressed their frustration and despair. Patients from far-off places who visit the R.P. Hospital with eye or child-related health issues are often met with disappointment due to the absence of these specialists. Despite numerous protests and demonstrations, there appears to be no concrete solution in sight. Those in dire need of medical attention are forced to undertake the arduous and costly journey to Port Blair for appropriate care.
Upon contacting a senior health services official regarding the issue, he admitted to the shortage of doctors in the region. “We have informed our administration about the doctor shortage. Currently, Mayabunder Hospital has two permanent doctors, including the Medical Superintendent, and a doctor on a contract basis. We also have a gynaecologist, but they are currently on medical leave.” he added.
The official also hinted at a silver lining, stating that the recruitment process for an ophthalmologist and paediatrician has already begun. Once completed, these medical professionals will be dispatched to areas like Middle Andaman and other districts in the Andaman and Nicobar group.
