Port Blair, Sept 06: Mr. Abdul Siddique, the ex-Pramukh of Mayabunder, has requested the Secretary of Shipping at the A&N Administration to provide vehicle services at Haddo Wharf.
Mr. Siddique, in his letter, highlighted the challenges faced by passengers commuting to and from the mainland and inter-islands to Port Blair via Haddo Wharf. He expressed deep concern about the long and strenuous journey passengers had to undertake from the passenger hall at Haddo Wharf, especially while embarking and disembarking with their luggage.
Although the port and shipping authorities have provided hand trolleys for passengers’ convenience, Mr. Siddique pointed out the impracticality of using these trolleys on the rough surface of Haddo Wharf, making it extremely challenging to transport luggage efficiently. This problem particularly affects elderly individuals, patients, and passengers, including those with disabilities.
Siddique acknowledged the security constraints that prohibit the use of private vehicles on the wharf and suggested a solution similar to the bus or E-cart services provided by airport authorities. He proposed the deployment of a bus or E-cart service at Haddo Wharf to assist passengers in reaching their ships conveniently.
