Port Blair, Sept 06: The President of the Andaman and Nicobar Development Corporation (ANDC), Mr. PK Haldar, has urged the Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the Chief Vigilance Officer of A&N Islands to launch an inquiry into the damaged road at Shoalbay area.
Mr. Haldar informed the Lt. Governor that the quality of a major road constructed at Shoalbay under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) had been compromised. He alleged that the project incurred an expenditure of approximately 10 crores. He stated that the road lacked a layer of proper stone material, and the construction specifications were not adhered to.
“The road had been inaugurated on April 6, 2023, but within a year, it had suffered severe damage. To address the issue, a recent tender of about 30 lakhs was floated for maintenance and renovation,” he added.
Mr. Haldar emphasized the need for a major renovation, especially considering that Bengali settlers had been living in Shoalbay for 70 years. During the initial construction, the public had raised concerns about the construction quality not meeting specifications, but these concerns went unheeded. Consequently, Mr. Haldar called for a thorough inquiry into the matter and appropriate actions to be taken.
