Port Blair, Sept 01: Residents of Teressa Island found itself in the grip of a significant power crisis as a major power failure struck on the morning of Wednesday, August 30. Reports indicate that the island experienced a complete blackout, which persisted for nearly30 hours. As per details yesterday evening the power supply was restored in Teressa Island.
This unprecedented power outage has presented numerous challenges to the residents of Teressa Island. The situation was exacerbated by a simultaneous blackout of the BSNL mobile network, rendering villagers unable to make crucial calls, particularly in emergencies related to health, or other urgent matters. Islanders who have their family members in Teressa Island were fuming with anger and highlighted the issue with Andaman Sheekha Daily.
Fortunately, in response to these grievances, technical faults were promptly addressed and rectified to a significant extent, leading to the eventual restoration of power. This development brought a sigh of relief to the island’s residents, who had endured the discomfort and inconvenience of the prolonged blackout.
Upon investigation, it was revealed that the source of the power disruption lay with the 320 KVA DG sets of Teressa Island. Technical issues had plagued these generators, resulting in the island-wide blackout. Authorities immediately alerted senior officials from the District Administration and the Electricity Department to address the situation urgently.
However, local villagers have voiced their concerns, pointing out that despite numerous complaints lodged with the Electricity Department, the power issue remained unresolved for an extended period of nearly 30 hours. This delay in restoring power left residents grappling with significant inconveniences and challenges.
A senior officer from the Electricity Department on Teressa Islands shed light on the technical aspects of the issue while talking to Andaman Sheekha Daily. He said that the 320 KVA DG Set had ceased functioning due to identified issues with the alternator’s insulation. Technicians were swiftly dispatched to initiate repair work.
