Port Blair, August 25: The Primary Health Center (PHC) in Kishori Nagar, of North Andaman region, is grappling with numerous challenges that are adversely affecting patient care, residents allege. On a daily basis, more than 100 patients, primarily from Kishori Nagar and Paschim Sagar Gram Panchayats, seek medical attention at the PHC. However, the inadequacy of staff nurses, ward attendants, and the absence of a Pharmacist has left the public frustrated.
Patients and residents of the vicinity have expressed their grievances, highlighting the scarcity of essential medical staff and resources at the PHC. According to local residents, months ago, Health officials from the Directorate of Health Services had visited the region and assured the appointment of a post nursing officer and pharmacist. Unfortunately, the situation has not improved. The hospital is currently running with minimal staff, which raises concerns about patient safety and quality of care.
“Moreover, patients admitted to the PHC have reported issues related to their diet, receiving only plain rice and dal for the past two years. This has caused severe hardships for those seeking treatment,” Mr. Uma Sankar Sarkar, Pradhan of Gram Panchayat Paschim Sagar told Andaman Sheekha Daily.
Despite repeated appeals from the public and local leaders, the situation remains dire, causing mounting frustration. Mr. Uma Sankar Sarkar added that currently, the PHC lacks a Nursing Officer and Pharmacist, and medical services are compromised due to understaffing.
As the Director of Health Service does not meet media persons and avoid answering to the media on such crucial issues, the Andaman Sheekha Daily team reached out to other officials for comment.
A senior officer of the Health Department told Andaman Sheekha that supply disruptions in food are due to logistical challenges and the tendering process. The lack of participants in the tendering process for ration items has hindered regular supply since last more than one year.
