Port Blair, July 13: Port Blair Airport has recently completed the construction of a new terminal building in response to the growing number of air passengers. Andaman Sheekha Daily has learnt. That the inauguration of this upgraded facility is scheduled to take place on July 18, 2023, with the esteemed virtual presence of Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi. The aim of this development is to enhance connectivity and provide world-class amenities to travelers. Notably, Civil Aviation Minister Mr. Jyotiraditya Scindia, is also expected to attend the inauguration ceremony.
For confirmation, a senior officer of Airport Authority of India stated, “Yes, recently we have received approval for the inauguration program, and the virtual inauguration is planned for July 18th. The program will be inaugurated by Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi, and as per recent information.”
As per information the newly constructed terminal building covers an impressive area of 40,000 square meters. Its structure includes a span of 240 meters with two 125-meter column-less spans supported by periphery steel columns and a central beam. The roof height of the building varies from 18 to 32 meters. The three-level building comprises a lower ground floor that includes remote departure and service areas, an upper ground floor providing access to the terminal building and an exit for arrival passengers, and a first floor with a waiting lounge designed for international passengers. This modern terminal has been designed to accommodate 1200 peak hour passengers and features 28 check-in counters, including 12 common-use self-service (CUSS) check-in counters. Additionally, the terminal includes three aerobridges and an apron specifically designed for type C/D category aircraft.
The official further explained, “For baggage handling, an in-line scan system has been adopted for departures, and there is a baggage carousel for arrival passengers. The building also offers an easy check-in process, seamless movement to departure gates, and minimum queuing. Moreover, it boasts a shopping area and a waiting lounge that is well-lit by natural light. Special provisions have also been made to ensure accessibility for all, including Divyangs (specially-abled individuals).”
The inauguration of the new terminal building marks a significant milestone in the efforts to boost air connectivity and provide world-class facilities to passengers. With its modern amenities and improved capacity, Port Blair Airport is poised to play a vital role in promoting tourism, trade, and economic development in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
