Port Blair, July 02: The Regional News Unit of Akashvani, Port Blair celebrated its 48th anniversary yesterday. The unit has been rendering services since 1975. Over a period of time, the RNU has developed a close relation with all the islanders by serving them daily news regularly. RNU is one of the most prominent and credible sources of news reaching across Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Member of Parliament, Kuldeep Rai Sharma graced the occasion as chief guest. In his address, he stated that the RNU has been playing a key role in providing all relevant information daily to the islanders for years. RNU shared a bond with the islanders. Islanders used to get all updates related to various sectors through the unit. It has created a great impact in the lives of people. The contribution of the unit in creating public awareness in the society is matchless.
News Editor, Gaurav Patwal said to prepare bulletins priority is being given to local content. The unit is using social media widely 24X7 to keep people informed about the latest updates.
K Ganeshan, President, Daily Newspaper Association and News Reader cum Translator, Rakesh Chander Lall also expressed their views.
The RNU has been instrumental in providing crucial information during Covid-19 pandemic and vaccination program. During the lockdown period, three special news bulletins prepared and broadcasted by the unit over two months.
The common islanders are well aware of the term ‘Pradeshik Samachar’. This is being broadcasted daily twice a day by the unit. In addition to this, the RNU also produced two weekly news based programs and one fortnightly interview program. The unit also worked to bridge the gap between mainland Andaman and Nicobar Islands by sending important news stories to Akashvani Delhi for broadcast.
With modern times, the RNU has marked its presence over social media. Now, news bulletins are being sent to listeners over whatsapp. Daily news updates are being sent regularly through its Twitter handle @airnews_pb. The handle has 15 k followers.
