Port Blair, June 11: Flash floods have become a recurring problem in the Mohanpura area of Port Blair, causing significant inconvenience and distress to the residents. These flash floods, which coincide with heavy rainfall and high tides, have persisted for the past several decades without any effective resolution. The impact of these floods is not limited to disrupting traffic and inconveniencing the people; it also inflicts substantial losses on numerous hardworking businessmen of Mohanpura area, who strive to support their families. Regrettably, these individuals have never received any compensation from the Administration, exacerbating their plight.
The responsibility to address this issue falls squarely on the administration, and it is imperative that they treat this matter with the utmost seriousness. The annual recurrence of these flash floods and the consequent hardships endured by the people are disheartening. Moreover, the bus terminal’s location in Mohanpura exacerbates the situation, causing additional challenges for the residents of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Islanders demand that to combat this recurring problem effectively, it is crucial for the administration to engage the expertise of professionals from Mainland India, who have successfully managed water drainage in similarly low-lying areas around the world.
It is high time that the administration takes swift action and demonstrates a steadfast commitment to resolving this issue once and for all. The diligent efforts of these professionals, combined with an agile approach to problem-solving, can bring about a lasting solution that ensures the well-being of the people of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Islanders also hope that the present Chief Secretary will establish a high-level committee, including, Senior Officers, Engineers and Civil Society Members, to address this situation promptly.
Such a committee, comprising competent individuals with relevant expertise, can devise effective strategies to mitigate the risk of flash floods in Mohanpura and prevent future water inundations. By proactively tackling this issue, the committee can alleviate the suffering of the residents and ensure a better quality of life for the entire community.
