Port Blair, June 05: On the occasion of the World Environment Day on 5th May 2023, the Campus Team of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Institute of Technology (DBRAIT) kick started the campaign of planting native varieties of trees to protect the environment and biodiversity. The Campus Officer, Training & Placement Officer, Inmates of both boys and girls hostel and the entire campus team planted the saplings of A & N Islands State flower “PYINMA” in the entire campus area, in association with the Department of Environment and Forests. With the recommendation of the State Board for Wildlife for the Union Territory of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, the flower of Pyinma tree (Lagerstroemia Hypoleuca) has been declared as State Flower of Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Pyinma is a medium to large sized tree found in the moist deciduous forests of our islands with the lilac colored flowers produced in bunches of pyramidal shape (inflorescences) is endemic to our islands and is very common in the Andaman group of Islands.
