Port Blair, June 05: On the Occasion of the celebration of world Environment Day, 2023 on 5th June, 2023 the Prime Minister of India launched the MISHTI (Mangrove Initiative Shoreline Habitat Tangible Income) scheme with an aim to enhance the mangrove restoration/rehabilitation in coastal states and Union Territories. Following the launch of MISHTI, a mangrove plantation was carried out by the Mayabunder Forest Division, Department of Environment and Forests near Fish landing center Pokkadera involving PRI members, general public, school students, sagar mithras and line departments, which was streamed live as a part of the main function held by MoEF & CC at Vigyan Bhawan. Speaking on the occasion, the Divisional Forest Officer, Mayabunder Dr. Abdul Qayum highlighted the importance and contribution of mangroves and the necessity of its restoration to mitigate climate change impacts such as sea-level-rise, extreme natural calamities like cyclone and tsunamis. He also briefed the gathering about the specialty and adaptive system of mangroves.
