Port Blair, Apr 17: The Assamese community living in Andaman and Nicobar Islands had a joyful and enthusiastic celebration of Rongali Bihu in Port Blair on 16th April. Around 70 members of the Assamese community took part in the celebration hosted by the Assam Association of A & N Islands (AAANI). Dr. Poonam Arora, President of the Bihu Celebration Committee 2023, hoisted the flag to mark the beginning of the celebrations. Dr. Arora highlighted the significance of organizing Rongali Bihu and its importance in Assamese culture. She stressed on the need to preserve and promote the rich culture of Assam to keep our identity alive. Mr. Girish Arora, President of the Hoteliers Association of A & N Islands and special guest on the occasion, appreciated the efforts of the association in organizing such events that bring the Assamese community together in these far-flung islands. The celebrations also witnessed a tree plantation led by Dr. Parag Deori, President of AAANI. This was followed by Swahid Tarpan (tribute to the martyrs) led by Dr. Janardan Saikia, Secretary of the Bihu Celebration Committee 2023.
The cultural programme began with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp. A host of events like the traditional Koni Juj (egg fight), tekeli bhonga, singing and dance competitions were held and it was followed by a mukoli bihu performance. The programme was an excellent platform for showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Assam and gave an opportunity for the youth and children to participate and learn about their culture. The annual general meeting of the AAANI was also held and a new executive committee was formed. All the attendees were treated to a delicious traditional breakfast and lunch that included delicacies such as pitha, doi chira, haah kumura etc. The event was a great success and reminded everyone of the importance of preserving cultural diversity and promoting the rich heritage.
