Port Blair, Mar 19: In a rescue effort, the villagers of Mannarghat area in South Andaman successfully captured a 1.5 metres long crocodile from the Mannarghat Nallah near St Xavier School. The incident took place on Saturday, March 18, 2023, when the crocodile got trapped in a fishing net while locals were fishing in the area.
The Mannarghat Nallah has long been a popular spot for fishing among the locals, and the presence of the crocodile took many by surprise. However, the quick thinking of the villagers saved the crocodile from a potentially fatal fate.
After the rescue, the Forest Department was immediately informed, and a team of officials reached the spot to take the crocodile into their custody. The reptile was later shifted to Biological Park, Chidiyatapu, as per the directions of Divisional Forest Officer, South Andaman, for its further care.
The incident has drawn attention to the need for caution and safety measures while fishing in the area. The Forest Department has urged the locals to exercise restraint and follow safety guidelines to avoid such incidents in the future.
The successful rescue operation by the villagers and the prompt action by the Forest Department has been lauded by the local community, and it serves as a reminder of the importance of cooperation and quick action in times of crisis.
