Port Blair, Feb 21: A 30-year-old Karen fisherman was taken to GB Pant Hospital for treatment after suffering from decompression sickness (DCS) while deep sea diving for lobster catch near Rutland sea shore area on February 16, 2023.
After receiving the news from sources, Andaman Sheekha team contacted Dr.Avijit Roy, a BENT specialist of Nitrogen Narcosis case, the man spent about 50 minutes and dived about 40 meters deep in the sea. After he rapidly ascended to the surface he suffered from body pain, muscle pain, disorientation, and partial paralysis.
Upon arrival at GB Pant Hospital, the medical team, led by Dr.Avijit Roy, began treating the patient. Due to the severity of the case, the team contacted the defense scuba diving unit and experts from Mumbai and Vizag for further assistance. The patient received treatment of HBOT for 4 hours and 55 minutes on table 62 of HBOT and seeing the seriousness of the condition the patient again received treatment for 2 hours 30 minutes on table 61 next day, which led to complete recovery.
Dr.Avijit Roy has requested all scuba divers to take necessary precautions and follow instructions to avoid decompression sickness.
The medical team’s efforts in curing the Karen fisherman is commendable and exemplary. Dr.Avijit Roy has played a significant role in the success of the treatment, and the patient is now in stable condition.
