Mayabunder, Feb 13: The residents of Thoratang and Duke Nagar villages of Mayabunder Tehsil have been grappling with an erratic water supply provided by the APWD, Mayabunder. According to information, the residents have been facing this problem for the past one and a half months and have not received piped water from the APWD. Instead, the water is supplied by tanker on alternative days, which is reportedly not sufficient for the villagers.
Due to the drying up of a large number of the water sources in Middle Andaman district, including Shivapuram CFO Nalla, the area has been reeling under an acute shortage of drinking water for the past few years. The underground pipelines have also been damaged due to rusting, leading to water leakage and wastage in many places, public allege.
Mr. Debabrata Das, the Pradhan of Swadesh Nagar Gram Panchayat, said that the water problem is a long-standing issue in their village, and despite their repeated protests, no repair work has been carried out. Now, due to the dried up Shivapuram CFO Nalla, the APWD has started supplying water by tanker, causing difficulties for the people due to a lack of water storage. He said that people of the area are in agitative mode.
The villagers have requested the Andaman and Nicobar Administration and APWD department to replace the damaged pipes and increase the water-supply timing so that they can get adequate clean drinking water.
