I am happy to know that the “World Wetlands Day” isbeing observed on 2ndFebruary, 2023 in these Islands with restof the country and world on the theme “WetlandsRestoration”. The 2ndFebruary, 1971 saw the world comingtogether to pledge its support towards saving one of the mostproductive ecosystems – the Wetlands, at the RamsarConvention held at Ramsar, Iran. The UN General Assemblyon 30thAugust, 2021 adopted Resolution that established 2ndFebruary as World Wetlands Day and is observed with greatcommitment across the world annually.
The wetlands include freshwater, marine and coastal ecosystems. Though it covers about 6 percent of all plant and animal species which live and breed in wetlands, it plays a critical role in ensuring welfare of the people and associated livelihood options. Wetland biodiversity assumes greater significance in an Island ecosystem like ours, where we depend on it for food, navigation and tourism activities.
As per reports, wetlands are disappearing at an alarming rate and this needs concerted action to revive and restore its functions. Therefore, on this occasion, I appeal to the people of Andaman & Nicobar Islands to join hands and take all possible measures for “Reviving and Restoring Wetlands” of Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
