Port Blair, Feb 01: A fire incident was reported yesterday at around 11:06 PM at the Head quarter Fire Station from some shops in Junglighat Dori Lall Mill area. Eight fire tenders including a Water Bowser were immediately dispatched to the scene and were able to control the fire within half an hour. The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
Ten shops were damaged in the fire, including two hotels, two grocery shops, two barber shops, one furniture shop, and one house that suffered 80% heavy damage. The firefighters, consisting of 50 to 60 firemen with police support, were able to save other rental shops and bring the fire under control within half an hour.
According to a senior officer of the Andaman and Nicobar Fire Service, around 45 lakhs worth of material was gutted in the fire, while around 25 lakhs worth of material was saved. The team is investigating the cause of the fire, but due to the extent of the damage, they have not been able to determine the origin of the fire. The case has been reported to the Aberdeen police station for further investigation, it is learnt.
