Port Blair, Jan 31: The Zilla Parishad Member of Baratang Island, Mr. R Alagerswami along with other prominent leaders of Bartang called on the Chief Secretary of the A&N Administration, Mr. Keshav Chandra, IAS, on January 31, 2023 to discuss the problems and demands of their Gram Panchayat.
They requested for the release of funds for the construction of an indoor stadium at Baratang. A 2000 sq. meter piece of land had been allotted in 2019 for this purpose, but construction has not yet started due to lack of funds.
The local leaders expressed their concern that the younger generation in the area was becoming involved in illegal activities due to the lack of sports and recreation facilities. They requested the allocation of funds under the “Khelo India Khelo” scheme or another similar program for the development of the land and construction of the indoor stadium for the benefit of the youth in the remote area.
The delegation also demanded organizing of a Beach Mela at Baratang to boost the island’s tourism sector.
