Port Blair, Jan 22: The Member of Parliament of Andaman and Nicobar Islands Mr. Kuldeep Rai Sharma has requested the Lt. Governor to enhance the existing Pension/Allowance of Rs.2500 per month being paid to or Old-age, Widow, Destitute women and Divyangs persons to Rs.5000 per month.
In a letter addressed to the Lt. Governor, the Member of Parliament mentioned that presently the A&N Administration under the Social Security Schemes is paying Rs.2500 per month as Pension/Allowances to the Old-age, Widow, Destitute Women and Divyang persons in order to help them financially independent and survive.
He mentioned that the Pension/Allowance has been last revised by the Administration during 2018.
He pointed out that due to abnormally high cost of essential commodities in the Islands as compared to the mainland, the above mentioned categories of the persons are facing immense difficulties in sustaining their life.
The Member of Parliament mentioned that many Old-age, widow and Divyang persons live alone in these Islands and it has become impossible to survive with only a Rs. 2500 pension in present day.
