Port Blair, Dec 01: Environmental Education Centre organized a workshop cum exposure visiton Science & Technology communication of best practices and awarenessrising on climate change & biodiversity conservation in Andaman & NicobarIslands in association with the National Council for Science and TechnologyCommunication, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. Workshop organized for students of JNRM on 29.11.2022 at JNRM. TheWorkshop was conducted for college students to make them understand theimpact of climate change issues on island biodiversity.
Dr. S. SenthilKumar IFS, Chief Conservator of Forest (Wildlife) was the Chief Guest onthe occasion. He addressed climate change happening behind our lifestyleand choices. The electricity people use, the food people eat, the way people travel andthe things people buy all contribute to a person’s “carbon footprint” theamount of greenhouse gas emissions associated with an individual’sactivities.
He urged the use of natural resources for sustainable use.Dr. H. K. Sharma, Principal, JNRM highlighted the issues of climate change.Dr. K. Venkatesan, HOD, Home Science, JNRM welcomed the gathering. Dr.Avijit Roy, Deputy Director (Health), DHS talked about the Basic concept ofWater Sanitation and Hygiene (WaSH). Dr. PM. Mohan, Professor, PondicherryUniversity addressed on Impact of climate change on terrestrial and marinebiodiversity: Andaman and Nicobar Islands perspective.
Mr. A. Gopal,Project Officer, CPREEC, Port Blair proposed a vote of thanks andhighlighted the biodiversity and climate change’s impact on biodiversityas well as the mangrove ecosystem of ANI. At the end of the program, screenedvideo clips on climate change and Dr. K. Venkatesan, HOD, Home Science,JNRM has given the valedictory address.
In the continuation of the program, an Exposure visit was organized forparticipants on 30.11.2022. The participants were taken to the BotanicalSurvey of India’s Herbarium and Zoological Survey of India’s museum forobserving the ex-situ conservation of biodiversity. After that, theyvisited the prem Nagar coastal line for the purpose of understandingunmanaged plastics break down into micro plastics and contribute to climatechange indirectly by negatively affecting marine life.
The students visitedthe mangrove patch of Sippighat and the BSI’s Botanical Garden, Nayasheharto understand the biodiversity conservation methods of in-situ and ex-situconservation.
