Port Blair, Nov 27: GCMMF Ltd (AMUL), Port Blair Branch has celebrated National Milk Day, Dr. VergheseKurien’s 101 birth anniversary and Amul’s successful completion of 76 years of serving Indian milk producers and consumers by organizing ”WALKATHON” from Cellular Jail to Flag Point today
Dr. VergheseKurien transformed India from a milk deficient Country to a milk surplus one. He has made India the largest milk producing Country in the world and Amul the largest Indian food brand.
Based on the advice of Sardar Vallabhai Patel to our milk farmers to control the resources they produce, by forming cooperatives, Dr. Kurien created the Anand Pattern of cooperatives.
Lal Bahadur Shastri, our former Prime Minister, advised Dr. Kurien to replicate the Amul model across the Country and thus NDDB was born.
Operation Flood was the program implemented by Dr.Kurien by creating many State cooperatives like Aavin, Milma, Nandini, Verka etc. and led to India becoming the largest milk producer in the world.
We now have more than 10 crore farmers covered by Dairy cooperative system.
Dr. Kurien was an institution builder, having founded Institute of Rural Management, National Co-op Dairy Federation of India, NTGCF (Nation Tree Growers cooperative to Federation), Indian Dairy Machinery Company etc. He has received numerous National and international awards.
The WALKATHON was flagged off by Cdr. Sh. Mrigank Jha, BVO, Port Blair and was attended by around 150 members of all age groups with walking enthusiasts, Naval Officers & Families, WDs & Families and others local citizens.
