
Port Blair, Nov.14:A 38 year old male patient from Diglipur, North Andaman was brought to the Department of Surgery with complaints of pain in abdomen and difficulty in digestion and weight loss frompast 3-4 months. He was examined and investigated with blood investigation and CT Scan of abdomen and chest and found to have cancerous growth arising from the stomach. He was further evaluated with Upper GI endoscopy and Biopsy was taken from the growth which was confirmed as Adenocarcinoma arising from the pylorus of the stomach. He was planned for a major laparoscopic subtotal resection of the stomach with reconstruction.
A team of Specialist Doctors headed by Dr. SajiVargheese, HoD Department of Surgery, Dr. Anil, HoDAnaesthesia,ANIIMS / GB Pant Hospital on 25/08/2022 performed a total laparoscopic subtotal D2 resection of the stomach containing the cancerous growth followed byreconstruction of the GI Tract namely Gastro-jejunostomy. The surgery was performed through 5 key holes (ports) lasting for 4½ hours. Post operatively, patient was shifted to Surgical ICU and recovered well and started oral intake on the 4thday after surgery. The patient was discharged on 10thday post operation. Following discharge, the patient was called after 3 weeks and was started on Adjuvant Chemotherapy and completed 2 cycles and the patient is doing extremely well and is on normal diet.
Such advanced supra major laparoscopic surgeries for Gastro- Intestinal Cancers are performed on regular basis at GB Pant Hospital/ ANIIMS, which were initially referred to mainland super Speciality Hospital and thus providing such advanced surgeries for cancer patients in the Islands itself without going to mainland.
