Port Blair, Aug 22: Andaman Sheekha Daily recently carried a news article regarding a needy patient Mr. Barun Sarkar, who is in urgent need of some money for his treatment in Mainland India.
Responding to the news, one of the most active NGOs of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, LOTE (Living on the Edge) today donated a sum of Rs. 10,206 to Mr. Barun Sarkar for his treatment in mainland hospital. The amount has been collected from LOTE members by president of LOTE, Mr. Abhay Kumar.
This is not the first time when LOTE has set an example and collected money for local patients for their specialised treatment. LOTE has also assured the patient to help in coordination with the Doctors of Ruby Hospital, Kolkata during his treatment.
Mr. Barun Sarkar, r/o Nayagaon has been suffering since the last many years due to a spinal injury. The patient presently needs financial support for his treatment.
The condition of Mr. Barun Sarkar is so bad that neither he can walk a moderate distance nor he can work anywhere for his livelihood. Often while walking to meet people for financial help, he has to lay down on the road for 20 to 30 minutes to gather enough support from his backbone to walk again. According to Mr. Barun Sarkar the constant pain he is suffering is increasing with time.
After a prolonged treatment at the local level, he was recently referred from GB Pant Hospital, Port Blair to Ruby Hospital, Kolkata on 10th August 2022 under Ayushman Bharat scheme but he is unable to afford the travel and other expenses.
As the cost of various medical tests conducted by Hospitals are not covered under Ayushman Bharat scheme the patient is unable to gather courage to visit mainland hospitals.
Meanwhile, a handful of other Islanders have also collectively donated nearly Rs. 15,000.
The patient still requires some more amount to undergo spinal-cord treatment, which will most probably involve a surgery.
