Port Blair, Nov 23: Leakage of Ammonia Gas today triggered panic in Sishty Nagar area of Port Blair City. As the gas spread all around an Ice Making Unit, residents living around the Ice Plant felt discomfort and burning sensations in eyes.
“Our eyes were burning all of a sudden and we are feeling uneasy. Many of us ran with children to other localities fearing major tragedy,” Mr. Sajid Sulaiman a resident of the area told Andaman Sheekha today.
However, the problem was tackled immediately by the Jawans of A & N Fire Services. The matter was communicated to Fire Services at around 7.10 pm and within 30 minutes the Ammonia Gas was dissolved with water by A & N Fire Service Jawans.
According to sources there were leakages in some equipments, inside the ice-plant, which had resulted in this accident.
This incident has once again raised the question whether it is safe to permit such Small Scale Industries in thickly populated areas. Haven’t we learnt anything from Bhopal Gas Tragedy yet?
