Port Blair, Apr 18: The newly formed Assam Association, A&N Islands organized Rongali Bihu on 17th April 2022 in Port Blair. Around 80 members of the Assamese community living in the Islands mingled with great enthusiasm and fervour on the wonderful occasion of Rongali Bihu – the harvest festival of Assam.
The day-long program commenced with flag hoisting by Chief Guest Mr. Diganta Gogoi, IFS (Retd), MoEF&CC followed by Swahid Tarpan (a tribute to the martyrs). The cultural program began with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp. The event showcased the rich traditional Assamese culture which helps in fostering a sense of cultural identity among the younger generation.
Different traditional games like KoniJuj etc. were organized for the children. A Mukoli Bihu program was held and the crowd was soaked in the spirit of Assamese dance and music. The women-folk were dressed in traditional attire of lively mekhela chador and their counterparts adored the gamucha – the traditional Assamese towel woven in handloom.
The logo of Assam Association, Andaman & Nicobar Islands was also unveiled on the occasion. The Bihu platter, consisting of delicious traditional food, was served on the occasion with all merriment and exuberance.
