
Port Blair, Dec 27: The seven day-long “Sher Ali Khan Memorial Football Championship Season 4” held under the banner of Yuva Sangh, Wimberlygunj concluded on Monday. Altogether, 24 teams participated in the tournament. In the finals, FIFA Sporting Club, Stewardgunj defeated Shifa Strikers, Bambooflat to clinch the title. The final match was witnessed by more than 2,000 people including sports dignitaries of these islands.
The ANTCC President, Mr. Rangalal Halder was invited as the chief guest of the closing ceremony while ANTCC Campaign Committee Chairman, Mr. TSG Bhasker was the guest of honour. The DCC President Mr. V.K Abdul Aziz along with Congress leaders Mr. Sebastian Tikrey and Joga Rao were the special invitees.
The tournament was organized with an aim to provide a platform to youth of the Islands to showcase their football skills and to boost their fitness level, so that they can compete with ease at higher levels of game. Another aim was to promote sports culture in the area and to keep away youth from drug addiction.
In his address, Mr. Halder encouraged players and stated that the game boasts the physical fitness and team spirit. He also assured that all the necessary equipments and facilities required for sports will be provided by the Congress party.
The Congress leaders lauded the Yuva Sangh, Wimberligunj for organizing the football tournament and developing the ground on its own expenses. The winning team of the final match was given a cash prize of Rs. 15,000 along with a huge trophy.
