Port Blair, Nov 10: High tension was brewing throughout the evening at Campbell Bay region of Great Nicobar Island on Wednesday as fishermen community decided to continue their protest against the operation of a fishing trawler in Nicobar District. The agitating people were also demanding sufficient quantity of Ice Blocks for fishermen.
Later after levels several talks and meeting the fishermen community reportedly took decision to withdraw the Chakka Jam at around 11.00 pm after an amicable settlement.
Earlier this morning there was some meetings between the fishing community and officers of the Administration of Great Nicobar. It is learnt that even the DSP Campbell Bay came to talk to the fishermen but as no fruitful results came out.
Later the people of the Small Trade Association (STA) and the general public met with Assistant Commissioner and urged to remove the protest to bring normalcy for public.
By evening there was heavy deployment of police, who were ready for Lathi Charge. The police department also appealed to the fishermen to vacate the road and end the protest by announcement.
As per source, hundreds of women, children, and senior citizens stayed firm on their decision to continue protest.
However, at 11.00 pm before the matter could further escalate, an amicable settlement was reached.
