Port Blair, Sep 15: A group of farmers from a larger part of the Middle Andaman region yesterday met with Dr. P. K. Mandal, State General Secretary, BJPKM, A&N Islands and pointed out that after a long gap the Agriculture Department is issuing fertilizer to the farmers, who have proof of documents for land.
It was learnt that the farmers of Swadeshnagar, Dharmapur, Thoratang, Swadeshnagar, Dukenagar, Kamalpur, Harinagar, Pinakinagar, Kamlapur, Jaipur, Govindapur, Pareshnagar, Basantipur and Pareshnagar recently had a meeting in which they discussed about the problems being faced by them regarding distribution of fertilizers among farmers in sufficient quantity.
It was further learnt after listening to the grievances of farmers Dr. Mandal immediately contacted with Mrs. Clarybell D’souza, Joint Director (In charge, Assistant Director, Agriculture, Mayabunder) and placed the facts before her for immediate steps to bring an end to the crisis of the fertilizer in the region in the larger interest of farmers.
Although the Joint Director maintained that as per SOP all required quantity of fertilizers have already been issued but later it has been learnt from the Depot in-charge that in the month of March 2021 some quantities of Urea was issued to the cultivators and thereafter till date no Urea fertilizer was issued.
Considering all problems of farmers, Dr. P. K. Mandal, State General Secretary, BJPKM, A&N Islands has requested the Administration to ensure that farmers get fertilizers in sufficient quantity and even those farmers who do not have proper documents for their land and who are working in other’s land should be given sufficient fertilizers.
