
Port Blair, Aug 04: ‘Swarnim Vijay Varsh’ is a tribute to the national war heroes who fought valiantly during the 1971 War displaying highest standards of professionalism and wrote a golden chapter in the history of modern India. To commemorate this decisive victory, Andaman & Nicobar Command organised various events at Cellular Jail, which proudly stands as a symbol of India’s independence struggle.
A joint band display consisting of troops from joint services played military tunes leaving the distinguished guests and veterans enthralled. Also a light and sound show and a short movie on 1971 War was displayed to give an insight to the gallant actions by Indian Armed Forces. BrigadierRajeev Nagyal, SM the Army Component Commander was the Chief Guest for the occasion.
The Army Component Commander collected soil from the patriotic earth of Cellular Jail and contributed towards the national initiative of soil collection from various parts of the motherland. In the British era, theCellular Jail, also known as KālāPānī(‘Black Waters’), and was used by the British government for exilingpolitical prisoners to the remote archipelago.
