Port Blair, May 09: The President of Living on the Edge (LOTE) has requested the Prime Minister of India to intervene into this matter of release of vaccine for Andaman and direct the Serum Institute of India to send at least first instalment of only 1 lakh vaccines immediately and remaining 2.6 lakh within short span.
In an online grievance submitted in PMO Public Grievance Redress And Monitoring System Mr. Abhay Kumar, President of LOTE, wrote that the second wave of COVID-19 is causing a large number of deaths in all over India and also in Andaman and Nicobar Islands the number of deaths due to COVID-19 increasing everyday.
Talking to Andaman Sheekha later today Mr. Abhay Kumar said that the Andaman and Nicobar Administration, under the leadership of the Chief Secretary Mr. Jitendra Narain has done wonderful job so far in vaccinating large number of Islanders in record time. He said that if sufficient number of vaccines reaches Andaman, the local Administration will certainly set an example in becoming first place in India to immunize all target population.
Meanwhile, in his online grievance he wrote that several experts are now claiming that the third wave of COVID-19 is inevitable, which may cause more health problems to children.
“According to experts, the best preventive measure is to vaccinate a large number of the population in India but unfortunately Andaman and Nicobar Islands are not getting sufficient quantities of COVID-19 vaccines for the age group 18 to 45. Till now Andaman and Nicobar Island have not got a single dose of vaccine for the age group of 18 to 44 years, despite the fact that Government of India has opened vaccination for people of age group from 01, May 2021,” the LOTE president wrote.
He mentioned that Andaman and Nicobar Islands are remote territory with very limited health care facilities and hence vaccinating the local residents is the best chance to save thousands of people from death in the second and (expected) third wave of COVID-19 infection.
