Port Blair, Mar 18: Several labourers of a private Construction Company (under NHIDCL) involved in ATR upgradation works in Middle Andaman region today met the Middle Andaman Correspondent of Andaman Sheekha and complained that they are being treated inhumanely by their employer.
They alleged that they are forced to work maximum possible hours in a day and no free time is given to them except break for lunch and dinner. They alleged that they do not even get sufficient time to take rest.
“As per government rules no one can force workers to work more than 8 hours and if workers are asked to work extra hours they must be compensated with Overtime. But here if any worker raises questions against inhumane working hours and no overtime, he is abused, threatened or terminated,” alleged a worker.
Some labourers complained that there is also huge discrimination in giving salaries to the workers by their employer, Vashishtha Pvt Ltd.
When contacted the site engineer of the Construction Company was unable to give a proper reply but he brought a few labourers for support but to everyone’s utter surprise, they also raised voice against the company, which proves something is really wrong in this regard.
Further this issue was also highlighted infront of Asst.Labour Commissioner (Central) Mr. Amritesh Kumar, Dollygunj, Port Blair, who gave a patient hearing and assured all necessary action in this regard once grievances are received by him either in hard copy or by email.
