Port Blair, Jan 17: Andaman and Nicobar Islands have got second batch of 11 air conditioned zero tail pipe emission e-buses from NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Ltd.
To improve the quality of public transport and to provide attractive & comfortable mode of transport to general public, an agreement between the Department of Transport of Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Ltd had earlier signed for deployment of 40 air conditioned zero tail pipe emission e-buses.
One prototype air conditioned zero tail pipe emission e-bus, was sent to Andaman on 9th December 2020 and after arrival of 11 more buses, now altogether, 12 such e-buses have reached Andaman, out of the total 40, ordered earlier.
“We have received 11 more e-buses and we are expecting that rest e-buses will reach Andaman before end of this month,” Dr. Navlender Kumar Singh, the Director of Andaman’s Transport Department told Andaman Sheekha today.
He said that after arrival of all 40 such buses, all these e-buses will be dedicated to public of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Earlier, the prototype e-bus was found to be capable of negotiating the sharp curves and steep uphill gradients of the area.
According to details, these buses are fitted with GPS based vehicle tracking system with panic buttons, security cameras for the safety of commuters especially women & children and mobile phone charging ports for all the seats.
Charging infrastructures has been established with the assistance of Electricity Department and APWD at Port Blair. All types of testing with load and driving conditions on the routes in South Andaman has been completed successfully.
