Port Blair, Dec 17: As per directions of Ministry of Labour & Employment, Govt. of India, the Andaman Administration has been pursuing registration of workers, employed in Building & Other Construction Works (BOCW), with the Andaman BOCW Welfare Board on a Mission Mode Project. Under this Project, a special on-site registration camp was conducted on 17 Dec 2020 by the Andaman BOCW Welfare Board, Labour Department of the Andaman Administration in coordination with the Assistant Labour Commissioner (Central), Port Blair, M/o Lab & Emp., Govt. of India at a construction site in South Andaman District. In the special registration camp, a total of 133 building workers were covered. The registered workers were handed over their Registration-Books, on the spot, by Shri Madhu Sudan Baidya, Secretary of the BOCW Welfare Board, and by Shri Kumar Amritesh, ALC(C), Port Blair. On this occasion, the ALC(C), Port Blair briefed the building workers about the benefits of their registration with the Board, importance of the Registration-Book and mechanism for payment of subscription and renewal of the membership and procedure of availing the benefits. The Labour Commissioner & DET, also being Secretary of the Andaman BOCW Welfare, briefed the workers about the welfare schemes like Educational Assistance, Marriage Assistance, Medical Assistance, Maternity Benefits, Pension Benefits and other Social Security benefits available to the beneficiaries. It was also informed that the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Beema Yojana (PMJJBY) and Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Suraksha Beema Yojana (PMJSBY) are also extended to all registered BOCW workers.
The Labour Department, Andaman Administration and the Board strive to ensure 100% coverage of the building & other construction workers in the islands. In this pursuit, the Labour Department, Andaman Administration appeals to the employers of construction sector to enable their workers getting registered with the Board so that the workers can be covered under the Social Security umbrella.
