Port Blair, Nov 20: The Food Safety Department, Andaman & Nicobar Islands in their continuous endeavor to ensure availability of safe, wholesome and hygienic food to the general public recently conducted fish testing at major fish markets in the town with the help of testing kits developed by ICAR-CIFT to detect the presence of chemical preservatives like ammonia and formalin etc. Total 158 fish samples were tested at Mohanpura, Junglighat and Bathu Basthi fish markets and all those fishes were found free from chemical preservatives.
The department also organized an awareness programme for meat vendors of the city, 28 meat vendors attended the programme. The authorized veterinary surgeon sensitized the meat vendors about hygienic slaughtering, safe handling of carcasses and relevance of examination by authorized veterinary surgeon. The Food Safety Officials explained in detail the requirements provided under FSS Act for meat & meat products trade, animal welfare etc.
