Port Blair, Nov. 16: Mr Chittranajan Chowdhary, General Secretary, Bharatiya Janata Kisan Morcha under the leadership of Mr Sibanand Bairagi, President, Bharatiya Janata Kisan Morcha and under overall leadership of Mr Ajoy Bairgi, State President, Bharatiya Janata Party, Andaman and Nicobar Islands have informed the Lt. Governor that the farmers of Andaman and Nicobar Islands will resort to protest if they are not distributed the fertilisers and pesticides soon.
He informed the Lt. Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands that the farmers of the Islands are in a unique situation where they will have to risk their lives amid a global pandemic and organise a protest against the Department of Agriculture for not distributing the pesticides and fertilisers to the farmers.
Mr Chittranjan Chowdhary further informed the Lt. Governor that after two years the Andaman and Nicobar Administration has ordered the stock of pesticides and fertilisers, which have already reached Port Blair long back. The Department of Agriculture has not dispatched the stock to different parts of the Islands for distribution to the needy farmers.
He further informed the Lt. Governor that Mr Ajoy Bairagi, State President, BJP, Andaman and Nicobar Islands had earlier also written letters to the authorities requesting them to dispatch the stock of fertilisers and pesticides for the farmers. He added that the farming season for paddy is nearly ending and still the stock of pesticides and fertilisers have not reached the farmers.
He also informed that the farmers are being forced to buy Urea from the black market which costs them about Rs. 7000 per bag. He added that if the stock of the fertilisers and pesticides are not dispatched to different parts of the Islands and distributed to the farmers, then the farmers will organise a mega protest. He requested the Lt. Governor to consider the genuine demands of the farmers.
