Port Blair, Jan 27: A concerted cleanup operation was organized at Kalapathar Beach in Havelock Island by the local resorts, viz; Wild Orchid Resort, Emerald Gecko and Andaman Bubbles with the support of the Forest Department and the involvement of the tourists and local residents on 23rd January, 2012. A total of 5 M/tons of garbage was collected from the 1 KM stretch of the beach on the Eastern side of the Island. The exercise emphasize the need for a regular collection, disposal and recycling of the waste generated in the island and to sensitize the local hotels, resorts, residents as well as the tourists visiting the island for keeping the island clean and green.
Appreciations are due to DFO B.P. Yadav, Havelock Forest Dept and his staff and of course tourists and residents who participated in the noble exercise. Such programs are now being planned on a month basis to not only ensure cleaner and greener Havelock but also bring awareness amongst the people of the islands.
