Port Blair, Oct 27: It has been observed that, after lifting of COVID19 Lockdown in Port Blair city, the sale & use of banned plastic carry bags is carried out by most of the shops & establishments including street vendors.
The Andaman & Nicobar Administration through its Gazette Notification vide No.: 186& 225, dated 05.09.2019 & 24.09.2019 imposed complete ban on use, storage, import, manufacture, transportation, distribution or sale and disposal of some of the Single Use Plastics and plastic carry bags respectively, irrespective of thickness, size, colour, and nature in the entire A&N Islands except the bags & other products made out of 100% compostable/ Biodegradable in nature & duly certified from Central Pollution Control Board.
The enforcement team of Port Blair Municipal Council (PBMC) appeals the shops & establishments including street vendors & coconut vendors, not to use Single Use Plastic Items such as carry bags & straws. During the recent raid conducted by PBMC, 374kgs of banned Single Use Plastics were seized and Rs. 26,400.00 of fines were imposed to various establishments. PBMC has now appealed general public to cooperate towards making the city Plastic free zone.
