Port Blair, March 24: Wherein people are running ‘pillar to post’ for a bucket of water here in these Islands during summer, some resources that are enough to cater to thousands in a village are found to be forgotten by the Administration.
One such example is the Hathi Nallah water project in the Birdline area of South Andaman, which according to the ward councilor of the area, Mr. Sanjay Meshack, can cater to at least the surrounding areas having a population of thousands.
Talking to Andaman Sheekha, Mr. Meshack said that the Hathi Nallah project was started by the Panchayat Samity around 15 years ago, and huge amount of money was spent to bring the project in utilization.
“The project is equipped with Pump House, Water Tank, well, two check dams et cetera but just because it is slightly damaged the project was abandoned,” said Mr. Meshack.
Mr. Meshack said that if the administration focuses a bit on the project either through the Andaman Public Works Department or Port Blair Municipal Council, the surrounding area will never-ever suffer from water crises.
“The solution of the water scarcity in the area is right under the nose, why is it not given attention, I would like to know?” questioned Mr. Meshack.
Mr. Meshack said that if the water of the Hathi Nallah is blocked, the entire Kamraj Nagar, Mahavir Nagar, Barood Godam areas, which has a huge population, will never suffer any water-related issues.
“If the Hathi Nallah project is paid attention, the water will come into the use of the public instead of it getting wasted in the sea,” Mr. Meshack added.
