On the occasion of Republic Day, I extend my heartiest greetings and best wishes to the people of our Islands.
It was on this day in 1950 that our Constitution adopted by the Constituent Assembly on 26 November 1949 came into force. We decided to be Sovereign, Socialist, Secular and Democratic Republic country guided by the principles of justice, liberty and equality.
While the Republic Day is a grand occasion to celebrate our great unity in diversity, the Fundamental Duties enumerated in the Constitution enjoin upon us, among other things, to abide by the Constitution, to cherish and follow noble ideals which inspired our struggle for freedom, to defend our country and to render national service when called upon to do so and to promote harmony and spirit of common brotherhood transcending religious, linguistic and regional or sectional diversities.
On this occasion I appeal to our people to be on guard against divisive forces and stay united and strong for peace, progress and prosperity of the country.
