Port Blair, Jan 25: Together with the rest of the country, National Voters’ Day was celebrated in the Islands on January 25, 2012 . The Day was celebrated at the Community Hall Ferrargunj, by State Social Welfare Board in association with Shardamani Mahila Mandal, Ferrargunj at 2.00 p.m. which was coincided with the celebration of National Girl Child Day as part of the weeklong celebration in which the Tehsildar, Ferrargunj Mr. Gasper James was the Chief Guest. Smt. Pushpa Biswas President, Shardamani Mahila Mandal presented bouquets to the Chief Guest, Chairperson, A&N State Social Welfare Board, Port Blair, Pramukh Panchayat Samithy Ferrargunj , Child Development Project Officer Block Development Officer and other PRI Members.
The programme was inaugurated by the Chief Guest by lighting lamp. Earlier in her welcome address, the Chairperson, A&N State Social Welfare Board, Smt. Ratna Kannan dwelt at length on the significance of the day and said that the mother is the first Teacher for her children as she plays an important role in bringing up. She threw lights on the importance of Voters’ Day as well as National Girl Child Day .She explained that new voters who have attained the age of 18 years are showing less interest in getting enrolled in the electoral rolls. She said the level of their enrolment was as low as 20-25 percent in certain cases. While addressing the gathering, the Chief Guest explained in detail about the importance of Voters’ Day and advised the adolescent girls to give attention for their education to become a good citizen in the society. He further expressed that education is compulsory for the girl child to acquaint themselves to know their rights.
The speakers at the function emphasized the need for protection and development of girl children especially the adolescent girls. The Speakers also delivered speech on the importance of Voters Day.
Smt. Pushpa Biswas, President of Shardamani Mahila Mandal, Ferrargunj expressed her happiness and extend her thanks to the Chairperson, A&N State Social Welfare Board for organizing such programmes at Ferrargunj for the benefit of rural women as well as adolescent girls
