Port Blair, March 24: Wherein people are running ‘pillar to post’ for a bucket of water here in the Islands, the resources that are enough to cater to thousands in a village are found to be forgotten by the administration.
One such is the Hathi Nallah water project in the Birdline area of South Andaman, which according to the ward councilor of the area, Mr. Sanjay Meshack can cater to at least a village population of thousands.
Talking to Andaman Sheekha over the phone today, Mr. Meshack said that he took up this matter with the authorities of Andaman Public Works Department and Municipal Council, several occasions in past, but no attention was paid to his request, as a result of which the people in their area are struggling for even a bucket of water.
Mr. Meshack said that there is the only requirement for the construction of two check dams which was destroyed due to heavy rain in the year 2007 but since then the project was never relooked by the authorities.
“In my area, there is one more overhead tank in Mahavir Nagar which was constructed when the area was under Panchayati Raj but remained used, if both the projects including Hathi Nallah water project in my area is given attention again the entire area will never suffer water shortage,” said Mr. Meshack.
Mr. Meshack finally requested the high command that now, after all the assets in his area is transferred to Municipal Council, either allocate sufficient funds to Municipal Council for the construction or else instruct APWD to do the needful, so that water problem may end in his area.
