Port Blair, Dec 07: Indian Coast Guard, A&N Region organized a massive Plogging Event (picking the litter while jogging) on 07 Dec 19 to generate awareness amongst masses towards “Swatch Sagar Abhhiyan”, ‘Swatcchta Hi Seva’ and ill effects of single use plastics under the aegis of Honb’le Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji initiative “Swatcch Bharat Abhhiyan”. Over 600 personnel participated from Coast Guard fraternity including ladies and children in this noble drive.The Plogging drive was conducted at Port Blair covering Marina Beach/Park, Corbyns Cove, Jungli Ghat shore area, Off Shore Road Hadoo, GB Pant hospital, Cellular Jail, Viper Island, Neil Island and all other locations in Andaman & Nicobar Islands having CG presence including Diglipur, Mayabunder, Hutbay, Kamorta and Campbell Bay. During this drive over 1750 Kgs of trash including plastic was collected from different beaches, tourist spots and public places of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, which was later handed over to Municipal Corporation for further disposal.
Speaking on the occasion, Inspector General Mukesh Purohit, TM, Chief of Staff, Coast Guard Regional Headquarters, Andaman and Nicobar emphasized the dedication and commitment of Coast Guard fraternity towards rendering selfless services for the people of the Isles. He further stated that Indian Coast Guard has transformed this beautiful idea of coastal cleanup environment and environmental preservation by spreading awareness amongst the locals and fishing community through events like ‘Plogging’ which serves dual purpose of staying fit and contributing to society by cleaning while jogging. Quoting that Andaman & Nicobar Islands are a bio-diverse &eco-sensitive area, he reminded the gathering that we are surrounded from all sides with ocean, therefore harmony with the ocean is important part of our living. During his address, he reiterated the importance of organizing the event and significance of having clean and sparkling beaches around the world which is connected by the oceans surrounding us.
Indian Coast Guard is committed to the protection of marine environment and shall continue to organize such drives to educate and motivate the general public on the issue.
