Port Blair, Oct 13: The 3rd open chess tournament was held in the community hall, Dairy Farm, Port Blair on 13/10/2019. Mr. NK Uday Kumar, Chairperson, PBMC was the chief guest for the inauguration of the tournament and Mr. V Ranjit Kumar, Assistant Director, Sports was the guest of honour.
Mr. Basker, President, Andaman Nicobar Chess Association, Mr. Eswar Rao ward councillor and Mr. Mohan Rao, President, Andhra Association were also present on the occasion.
The Chairperson, PBMC appreciated the young players participated in the event and urged the players to cultivate sportsman spirit on their life. Assistant Director, Sports highlighted the importance of chess and other game in students’ life and assured all support for the upliftment of chess in the islands.
A batch ceremony was also held during the inauguration for Mr. B Neeliaha, Education Department, who has qualified for the norms of FIDE instructor while Mr. Kodanda Rao cleared the norms of National instructor. The Chairperson awarded batch and certificates for both the instructors.
Mr. PS Satish won the tournament with scoring 6 points in total 6 rounds, while Mr. Ram Chandran Raha and Dan Raju stood second and third position.
Mr. R Kasturi Bai student of GDMS stands fourth position on open category. Highlight of the tournament was a young boy of under 9 Ayushman Sarker played brilliantly and obtained the 9th position on open category.
All the winners were awarded with cash prize and certificate.
Mr. Mohan Rao, president Andhra Association was the guest for prize distribution ceremony. Mr. H Dinesh International Arbiter presented the tournament report and highlighted the future plans of chess association in terms of development in across the islands.
