Port Blair, Sept 23: As part of the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ campaign, the Directorate of RD, PRIs & ULBs, A&N Administration is focusing on large scale awareness and mass mobilization for collection of plastic waste from Oct. 3 to 27, 2019. The collected plastic wastes will then be effectively recycled and disposed.
As a step towards this campaign, the Directorate of RD, PRIs & ULBs, A&N Administration in coordination with the District Administration, South Andaman, under the guidance of Secretary (RD/Panchayat)/Deputy Commissioner, South Andaman, has taken the initiative to make cloth bags from waste cloths through SHGs.Accordingly, awareness programs were conducted for the members of Self Help Groups (SHGs) formed under DAY-NRLM and rural ladies at Mithakhari and Mannarghat Gram Panchayats recently by the staff of the Directorate of RD, PRIS & ULBs in the presence of the respective Pradhans. During the programme, awareness about harmful effects of single used plastic items were highlighted. Women were encouraged to stitch cloth bags from the waste cloths provided to them through various sources. This in turn would be a source of income for the SHG ladies.
