Port Blair, June 14: Dozens of residents of Chidiyatapu area today staged a massive protest near Wild Grass Hotel, Chidiyatapu against death of an old lady, in a road accident at 03:00pm. As per reports, the lady namely Budhunj Samath, around 62 years old, was walking on the road, when she was hit by a speedy Tourist Vehicle, following which she died on the spot.
According to reports, the driver of the tourist vehicle after hitting the lady didn’t even stop to see her conditions or to shift her to the hospital, which triggered anger among the villagers.
Sources said that the angry protestors refused to handover the dead body of the lady to the police and demanded the police to bring the driver of the vehicle on the spot. The situation for a certain period of time went so much out of control that the Police had to even call IRBn Jawans to control the situation.
Later in the evening the situation was controlled by the local police and the dead body of the lady was then shifted to the GB Pant Hospital. It is also learnt that the driver of the tourist vehicle surrendered himself to the Pahargaon Police Station later in the evening.
