Diglipur, Jun o4: Postal services have come to a halt in all branches and sub post offices in the A & N District, following a strike by the members of All-India Gramin Dak Sevak Union for the past 12 days in All India level.
Alleging that Gram Dak Sevaks are working under poor condition, AIGDSU secretary (A & N Islands) P Malyadri said that “we have demanded regularisation of GDS staff, eight-hour work and provision of pension as directed by New Delhi and Madras benches of Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT). We further demanded the implementation of the modifications as recommended by the Chandra Committee,” he said.
In Andaman 1 HPO, 18 Sub Post Offices and 75 rural offices are participating in this strike. About 75% staffs in Islands are GDS staff.
Meanwhile, the locals are facing a tough time due to the ongoing protests by the postal staffs. While some people are deeply worried as they are unable to withdraw money from Post Office because of this strike, even for urgent needs, many other youths are worried that because of such strike they may not get important letters about various job interviews and call letters.
